Abstract The paper presents the results of combined effects of an extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (50 Hz) (ELF EMF) and SiO2 nanoparticles on fluorescence of plant gametic cells (immature microspores). The data were recorded by a BD FACSJazz® cell sorter after cell irradiation by blue laser (488 nm). A significant difference of fluorescence was observed between gametic cells after 1 hour incubation in suspension of SiO2 nanoparticles and the control gametic cells. It was observed that fluorescence intensity of gametic cell was higher with ELF EMF treatment in comparison to control cells, but it was statistically significant only for cells treated with electromagnetic radiation…

Magnetized boxes for housing polarized spins in homogeneous fields

Abstract We present novel types of permanently magnetized as well as current powered boxes built from soft-ferromagnetic materials. They provide shielded magnetic fields which are homogeneous within a large fraction of the enclosed volume, thus minimizing size, weight, and costs. For the permanently magnetized solutions, homogenization is achieved either by an optimized distribution of the permanent field sources or by jacketing the field with a soft-ferromagnetic cylindrical shell which is magnetized in parallel to the enclosed field. Electromagnetic moments of quasi-stable particle

We deal with the problem of assigning electromagnetic moments to a quasi-stable particle (i.e., a particle with mass located at particle's decay threshold). In this case, an application of a small external electromagnetic field changes the energy in a non-analytic way, which makes it difficult to assign definitive moments. On the example of a spin-1/2 field with mass $M_{*}$ interacting with two fields of masses $M$ and $m$, we show how a conventionally defined magnetic dipole moment diverges at $M_{*}=M+m$. We then show that the conventional definition makes sense only when the values of the applied magnetic field $B$ satisfy $|eB|/2M_{*}\ll|M_{*}-M-m|$. We discuss implications of these re…

Extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) induce in vitro angiogenesis process in human endothelial cells.

Effects of extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on activation of angiogenesis were analysed using cultured umbilical human vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The cultures were exposed to a sinusoidal EMF to intensity of 1 mT, 50 Hz for up to 12 h. EMFs increased the degree of endothelial cell proliferation and tubule formation, coupled by an acceleration in the process of wound healing. Partial Discharge on-line measures in cable's EPR insulation

In this paper, an experimental study, carried out on an operating MV cable, is presented. The aim is to identify, locate and characterize defects in the cable's EPR (ethylene-propylene copolymer rubber) insulation. Direct partial discharge measurements have been compared to those obtained by high frequency electromagnetic field measures. The latter have been carried out using a sensor which does not require any galvanic connection with the system under test and that performs an intrinsic localization of the defect. Moreover, an analysis of an MV cable junction has been carried out using the same tools.

Second quantization and atomic spontaneous emission inside one-dimensional photonic crystals via a quasinormal-modes approach

An extension of the second quantization scheme based on the quasinormal-modes theory to one-dimensional photonic band gap (PBG) structures is discussed. Such structures, treated as double open optical cavities, are studied as part of a compound closed system including the electromagnetic radiative external bath. The electromagnetic field inside the photonic crystal is successfully represented by a new class of modes called quasinormal modes. Starting from this representation we introduce the Feynman's propagator to calculate the decay rate of a dipole inside a PBG structure, related to the density of modes, in the presence of the vacuum fluctuations outside the one-dimensional cavity.

High-frequency electrodeless discharges in helium

Modelling of high-frequency electrodeless discharges (HFEDs) in helium is presented. The model combines calculations of electromagnetic field profiles and plasma parameters including kinetics of the excited atomic states. A method of the self-consistent numerical solution for the plasma?field system is proposed. The method takes into account a temporal hierarchy of the kinetic processes in the HFED plasma. A Geant4 simulation package for the sage spectrometer

International audience; A comprehensive Geant4 simulation was built for the SAGE spectrometer. The simulation package includes the silicon and germanium detectors, the mechanical structure and the electromagnetic fields present in SAGE. This simulation can be used for making predictions through simulating experiments and for comparing simulated and experimental data to better understand the underlying physics.

Near field retrieval from far field using PDFT

A new algorithm is applied for obtaining the near field form far field measurements. It is not only the simple DFT applied to the spectrum, but also a newer algorithm, called PDFT, which makes use of the information in the transformed domain. Its main advantage is that the resolution obtained is better than with DFT, since more information about the antenna is used. Furthermore, no iterations are applied and the best approximation in the way of minimum weighted norm is achieved.
